Abstract
We present an overview of the known ant fauna of Alberta, Canada, which consists of 94 species and subspecies in 16 genera and three subfamilies. Two potentially new species were identifi ed inthe genus Myrmica, while the rest of the fauna is represented by previously recognized taxa. We provide an illustrated HTML-based dichotomous key to species of ants in Alberta based mostly on morphological characters of the worker class. When keyed to a species, a hyperlink to its species profile on http://www.antweb.org is provided for photographic and locality comparison.

Da ich einige Male über Ameisen in Kanada einschl. Alberta geforscht habe, hat mich dieser Schlüssel interessiert. Er enthält recht gute, übersichtliche Strichzeichnungen. Wertvoll sind die Hyperlinks zu http://www.antweb.org für Fotos und Verbreitungsangaben.
Kleine lapsus: In Tabelle 1: Subfamily Myrmecinae. – Das muss natürlich “Myrmicinae” heißen; im Schlüssel Fig. 41: Subgenus Myrmetoma – muss „Myrmentoma“ lauten.

Wie leider üblich in Nordamerika wird Leptothorax muscorum genannt, die dort jedoch nicht vorkommt. Sie wird durch mehrere teils unbeschriebene Arten vertreten, die sich morphologisch deutlich von L. muscorum Nylander aus Europa unterscheiden. Francoeur und Buschinger haben wiederholt darauf hingewiesen. Immerhin wird S. 2 angemerkt:

In addition, the taxon we refer to as Leptothorax muscorum (= “L. canadensis”(Nylander), a name proposed for North American members of this Holarctic taxon) may represent several species in Alberta, including L. pocahontas.

Über diese Veröffentlichung hatte ich hier vor fast 6 Jahren schon kurz referiert. Nun kam sie mir wieder in Erinnerung. Die Arbeit erschien ja 2013, lange nach der Zeit meiner Forschungen in Nordamerika (zusammen mit André Francoeur aus Québec und mit Kandidaten meiner AG, u.a. Jürgen Heinze). Ich habe sie nochmals durchgeschaut, auch um zu sehen, ob sich evtl. weitere Entwicklungen ergeben haben.
Die Arbeit enthält einen guten Schlüssel mit vielen klaren Strichzeichnungen, sowie ein Glossar mit leicht verständliche Erläuterung der Fachbegriffe. Hilfreich ist auch eine Anleitung zur Präparation von Ameisen für die Nutzung des Schlüssels („Preparing Specimens for Use with this Key“).
Ich kopiere hier mal die Teile von Tab. 1 „List of species of Formicidae known from Alberta“ ein, wo ich etwas beigetragen hatte.

So weit ich es überblicken kann, ist die Taxonomie der kanadischen Leptothorax und Temnothorax noch immer ziemlich "unvollendet". Die aus Schweden beschriebene „Leptothorax muscorum (Nylander) 1846“ dürfte es in Nordamerika jedenfalls nicht geben, worauf wir immer wieder hingewiesen haben. Die Autoren haben das im Text erwähnt, die Art dennoch in der Tabelle gelistet:

… the taxon we refer to as Leptothorax muscorum (= “L. canadensis” (Nylander), a name proposed for North American members of this Holarctic taxon) may represent several species in Alberta, including L. pocahontas.
Temnothorax: like Leptothorax, Temnothorax from the northern Nearctic is relatively poorly known (Mackay and Buschinger 2002; Buschinger and Schultz 2008). It is possible there are more species waiting to be recognized in Alberta.

Leptothorax faberi wurde bisher anscheinend nicht wieder gefunden. Es ist eine Inquiline, von der ich seinerzeit zwei kleine Kolonien fand. Ich konnte sie nur kurzfristig halten, konnte aber im Labor dennoch wenige Geschlechtstiere und ganz wenige Arbeiterinnen aufziehen. https://antwiki.org/wiki/Leptothorax_faberi

Leptothorax pocahontas ist nach wie vor rätselhaft: Sie wurde am Originalfundort im Jasper NP wiederholt auch von anderen Myrmekologen wiedergefunden, schien zunächst eine sozialparasitische Art zu sein, ließ sich bei mir über Generationen züchten, ist vielleicht eine Hybridform, doch letzte Klarheit besteht noch immer nicht. https://antwiki.org/wiki/Leptothorax_pocahontas

Die lange Behaarung und die glatte Skulptur von Gynen der vermeintlich (?) parasitischen Art im Vergleich zur Wirtsart waren sehr auffällige Merkmale, die mich auf den Gedanken brachte, es könne eine nordamerikanische Verwandte der in den Alpen verbreiteten Inquiline Leptothorax pacis (= Doronomyrmex pacis) von Leptothorax acervorum sein, s.a.hier !

Es gibt noch immer viele spannende "Aktenzeichen XY ungelöst" - Probleme für Myrmekologen!
