Dass Ameisen „Toiletten“ anlegen, wo sie koten und urinieren, aber auch Futterreste entsorgen und ihre Toten bestatten, ist lange bekannt und lässt sich z. B. auch in einem kleinen Experiment etwa mit Lasius niger demonstrieren (siehe Bilder im Blog).
Doch wie wird verhindert, dass pathogene Schimmelsporen von den Leichen auf lebende Nestgenossinnen übergehen? - „Argentinische Ameisen“, Linepithema humile, sterilisieren potentiell gefährlichen Abfall durch Applikation eines Sekrets aus Analdrüsen.

Im Englischen bietet sich ein Wortspiel an: Die Autoren planten zunächst als Seitenüberschrift (running title) für ihren Beitrag “Argentine ant RIP: rest in pee”.
Ursprünglich lateinisch R.I.P. = Requiescat in Pace, „er/sie ruhe in Frieden“, wie man es oft auf Grabinschriften findet. - Rest in Pee: „Ruhe in Pipi“. Nun ja…
